Treadmill Tip

Set 1.0% incline to replicate the energetic cost of calm outdoor running.

Treadmill Pace FAQs

Practical answers to common pacing, split calculation, and training questions.

What is 10 km/h on a treadmill in running pace?
A treadmill setting of 10.0 km/h equals exactly 6:00 min/km (9:39 min/mile). At this speed, you cover 1 mile in 9 minutes and 39 seconds, and complete a 5K in exactly 30 minutes.
What is 8.0 mph on a treadmill in min/mile and min/km?
A treadmill belt speed of 8.0 mph equals exactly 7:30 min/mile (4:40 min/km), or 12.87 km/h. At this speed, a 5K is completed in 23 minutes 18 seconds.
Does setting a treadmill to 1% incline replicate outdoor running?
A widely cited 1996 study by Jones & Doust published in the Journal of Sports Sciences demonstrated that setting a treadmill incline to 1.0% roughly offsets the lack of air resistance (aerodynamic drag) for speeds between 7.0 mph (11.3 km/h) and 11.2 mph (18.0 km/h). At slower jogging speeds below 7.0 mph, the energetic difference between 0% and 1% is negligible.
How do I convert treadmill speed to pace manually?
To convert mph to minutes per mile: Pace (min/mi) = 60 ÷ Speed (mph). For 6.0 mph: 60 ÷ 6.0 = 10.0 (10:00 min/mile). To convert km/h to min/km: Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ Speed (km/h). For 12.0 km/h: 60 ÷ 12.0 = 5.0 (5:00 min/km).
