Predicting 10K Times: Pete Riegel Formula

When projecting 10K race performance from a shorter 5K distance, doubling your 5K time will underestimate your final finish time due to fatigue accumulation. We utilize the scientifically validated Pete Riegel race prediction model:

T₂ = T₁ × (D₂ ÷ D₁)^1.06

Where T₁ is your recent 5K time, D₁ is 5 km, and D₂ is 10 km. The fatigue exponent of 1.06 reflects the physiological reality that speed diminishes by approximately 6% for each doubling of race distance.

Disclaimer: Race predictions are mathematical estimates based on generalized fatigue factors. Realized performance depends on course elevation, weather, fueling, and whether the runner has accumulated sufficient weekly endurance mileage.

Q&A Knowledge Base

10K Pacing FAQs

Practical answers to common pacing, split calculation, and training questions.

What pace do I need to run a sub-50 minute 10K?
A sub-50:00 10K requires averaging faster than 5:00 min/km (8:03 min/mile) at a sustained speed of at least 12.00 km/h (7.46 mph). You must reach the 5K halfway marker in under 25:00.
How is a 10K time estimated from a recent 5K race?
We use Pete Riegel's endurance prediction formula: T10K = T5K × (10 ÷ 5)^1.06 (approximately T5K × 2.085). For example, a runner with a 24:00 5K has an estimated 10K potential of approximately 50:02, assuming adequate aerobic mileage base.
How many miles is a 10K road race?
A 10K race is 10.0 kilometers, which equals exactly 6.21371 miles (commonly referenced as 6.2 miles). On a 400m track, it requires 25 full laps.
What is a good 10K pace for intermediate runners?
For regular recreational runners with 6+ months of consistent training, finishing a 10K between 48:00 and 58:00 (pace of 4:48 to 5:48 min/km or 7:43 to 9:20 min/mile) is a typical, highly competitive age-group target.
