Pacing Strategies: Even vs. Negative vs. Positive Splits
Executing your pacing correctly on race day is one of the most critical factors determining whether you reach your goal or hit the dreaded "wall":
Even Splits
Running every kilometer at an identical rate. It represents maximum biomechanical efficiency on flat, calm courses because kinetic accelerations are minimized.
Negative Splits
Running the second half faster than the first. Highly recommended in crowded mass-start marathons to prevent early lactic acid accumulation and glycogen depletion.
Positive Splits
Running the first half slightly faster. Commonly seen on courses with significant opening descents (such as the Boston Marathon) or when tailwinds favor the first half.
Note: We do not claim any single pacing strategy is universally best. Match your race plan to your training profile, course elevation profile, and weather conditions.
